The ability to search for birth, marriage and death records in regions now in Poland has enabled research most of us never thought possible. But for many, these resources provide only a perplexing maze of random searches. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the primary databases containing parish and civil registry records in Poland, including those from Evangelical and Roman Catholic churches. It will include some examples from records in these databases used in conjunction with FamilySearch and Ancestry.com, or with databases from organizations like the Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe, the Poznan Marriage Project, and the Galizien German Descendants. Examples as well as suggestions to develop a search strategy will be given. Handout will be included; available via online link or printed if requested.
Sigrid Perry has worked with archives and special collections at Northwestern University Libraries since 1980 (M.A., Ph.D., NU); indexed Cyrillic, Polish and German parish records for The Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe.
